NY Times Bestseller Gabriel S.A. Clason' new book of his series on Detective Hector Hardgrove. Mr. Clason wanted to keep the branding o the series and although used authentic pic of Mulholland Dam where a pivotal scene takes place we treated to make it look less photographic. The reviews of the author played an important role to get the desired results.

This project was for Practical Ecommerce, an online magazine for ecommerce merchants, at PracticalEcommerce.com. They required a unique cover template for "Great Ideas" ebook series. They offer this ebook on their website to attract email subscribers. The "Great Ideas" topics vary. Sometimes it's general ecommerce ideas, such as "50 Great Ecommerce Ideas." Other times it's for aspects of ecommerce, such as "40 Great Email Marketing Ideas." They needed a unique catchy cover template to appeal to business people. The title needed to be legible at a small size, such as 125x175 pixels.

When creating this design, I wanted to do something that was not typical of the web when viewing similar designs. Instead of using web graphs and such, I went with the data style design. The cover reflects part of the title in terms of darkness while focusing on the relationship between the couple and the city.

This cover is intended to be a series similar to Chicken soup for the soul or "dummies" books where there are many versions with the same cover but needs changing elements to separate the books for different audiences...entrepreneurs, teachers...etc. This cover plays on the title concept of failure in a school paper or document concept. The paper has a torn look in order to insert a photo that is specific to each scenario. The double arrow box can change color with each book and showcase the intended audience. The title has a hand drawn sketch feel with a stamp look for the large word, Failure.
