Scientific research illustration

Fence lizards in the southeastern United States are predated on by invasive fire ants, which were introduced by humans into the region beginning in the 1930s. The lizards appear to have evolved a behavioral response (shaking off the ants) and longer back legs (to more effectively shake off the ants, it seems) in areas with the longest exposure to the ants.
