I'm not sure why 99designs is the blame either. They were VERY accommodating as I saw on my end. They reminded designers to include their sources. The ones who submitted designs with copyright infringements no longer have accessible accounts, which gives me the impression their accounts were suspended.

No one forced the CH to have an open survey where anyone could vote. And I highly doubt 99designs forced the CH to choose the design he picked. In fact, the CH said in an earlier comment "Besides, it's my contest, not yours. Clear?" when oddities about the way the contest was run was mentioned.

If the CH didn't like the design, why did he choose it? The only reason the design even made it as far as it did was because the CH saw something in it to select it as a finalist, then to pick it for the final round.

Why should 99designs ruin their reputation of following through with rewards because a CH chose to run a contest how he saw fit then didn't like his results after the fact?

I would think designers should be happy 99designs awarded the prize. What if every CH were allowed to go through the process, get a multitude of designs (84 for this contest), pick a winner after the designers tweaked I don't know how many times, then as you're celebrating your win, 99designs comes back with, "Sorry... the CH changed his mind about fulfilling his end of the contract. He didn't like that your friends took the opportunity to vote for your design." What?

I'm not sure about this, then who should be the winner? 99designs manipulate the contest? If l'm the ch, i dont need poll and i do select the right one my own.

@TPCdesign I appreciate your thoughts. I too thought 99 Designs would be a good way to get quality design work, but the company were a big let down. They pay lip service to ethical standards, but don't abide by them.

It's a shame because I've seen a lot of talent here. Hard working designers deserve better, as do customers.

99 Designs need a radical shake up of how they do business.

I'm sorry to hear about the terrible way you have been treated Mark and I don't blame you in the least for looking elsewhere for your cover designs.

Graphic design is my dream job and I thought 99 Designs would be a good way to start but because of what I've seen and experienced on the site, I'm losing faith in it. I certainly don't want to be associated with such shady and underhanded dealings. I'm just amazed at the way the staff at 99D have reacted to it.

I would NEVER recommend this site to anyone - both potential CH's and good honest designers.

I wish you all the best with your books :)

I have now discovered that the designer who won the final poll rigged the results by getting his friends to vote himself up and everyone else down. When I brought this to 99 Designs attention, they refused to do anything and paid out the prize against my express wishes. I informed them that if they supported his dishonesty, then I would take my business elsewhere and would never use 99 Designs again. They ignored me, and so they have now lost me as a customer. I would also actively dissuade any other author from becoming involved with them.

The contest is therefore officially a bust and I am looking elsewhere for my designs.

I am sorry for the way things turned out, but after two instances of copyright violation and then the vote rigging, I have concluded that although I saw a great deal of talent, there are just too many fly-by-night designers associated with 99 Designs who will stoop to illegal or dishonest tactics, and that the company seem to wash their hands of the problems. I have a series of best selling books and I do not want to take these sorts of risks or deal with this kind of hassle.

I am therefore making alternative arrangements for future design work.

I appreciate your commitment and I wish things could have turned out better. Unfortunately as often happens in life, the thoughtlessness, selfishness and dishonesty of a few end up ruining things for everyone else.

    NOTICE TO ALL FINALISTS

First of all, I would like to thank everyone who participated in this contest. I expected to see good work, but some of what I have seen has been truly exceptional.

I am now consulting my author group and conducting a poll, with the view to determining the winner or winners. I will let you know the outcome as soon as possible.

    @Heavenwill

Here is the reply I received from 99D.

    "Hi Mark,

"The rate of commission varies depending on the pricing level chosen when the contest is launched. On average, the split is approximately 70%/30% with the majority going to the designer. For your contest, you are correct -- the prize amount will be $200 for the winning designer."

In the case of this contest they are taking 33%. In my view that is excessive. However, since I don't work for 99D or have any part in shaping their policies, I am afraid my opinion doesn't count for much.

    Hey Designers!

Please remember it's never too late to declare any and all stock images you may have used each time you upload your entries. The CH must be able to clearly see the image's license info, and whether or not any images require purchase.

    Thanks and good luck!

@heavenwill. I have raised the matter with 99 designs since in the final analysis, they are the only ones who can explain the discrepancy in their figures.

I will let you know what answer I get.

I'm following the contest because I'm fascinated with the artwork presented. This is not the first contest I've followed, and it's likely not to be the last. There are no rules stating you have to be a contestant to watch or comment. Implying people with no stake have no business watching is like saying only the singers from American Idol are allowed to discuss or watch the show.

The only reason my comments appear to be disruptive is because your responses are so catty and draw attention to my comments. You're disrupting your own competition.

Really, I'm not sure why you're so defensive. Commentators can't even give praise without you coming to the defense. Stating the amount of the prize is not accusing you of ripping individuals off. Commending artists on their efforts is not accusing you of ripping them off.

It was the artists' choices to enter the contest... it's not like you forced them. Whether the prize was $15 or $1500 and people entered, that's their choice. The artists are still submitting wonderful work, putting in quite an effort with no guarantees.

And before you get all bent out of shape about guarantees, I'm not talking about guaranteeing the prize. (I also read your comment on that. As I said, I've been following this contest with interest.) I'm talking about there being only one winner, which has little to do with you and more about the way contests work. Even if the artist you select as the winner does choose to work with you down the line, there are still many MANY of hours of work put into this contest with no compensation, which includes hours put in incorporating feedback.

I paid $300 and their declared take is 20% so that figure doesn't add up. I do not have access to the screen you showed me - it must be on the design side.

I am happy to query it with them. other than that, I don't know what to tell you.

I will let you know if and when I get a reply.
