Design an elegant logo for a new publishing house

Polymath Press

Polymath Press is a new publishing house dedicated to printing the finest quality books. We work in both fiction and non-fiction, with specialties in horror, dark fantasy and science fiction, history, science, and magic tricks, though we occasionally branch into other genres as well.

Blood red or gold colors seem appropriate, but don't limit yourself to just those. The final design will need to look good both in color and in black and white.

We're looking for a logo with some versatility. Simple elegance is a must, because the logo will need to be displayed along with our name (Polymath Press) on our letterhead, website, and social media, as well as in small size on the spines of books. We publish a lot of horror, so something with a bit of a creepy edge would be appropriate, though because we also publish other things, nothing too elaborate, gory, or extreme (in other words, something that might appeal to a sophisticated horror audience, but not too on the nose). Perhaps something evocative of dark sophistication and history would be appropriate. Err on the side of classical simplicity rather than complexity. Do not incorporate the logo directly into the text of our name (Polymath Press)--we need to be able to separate the logo from the text to fit it on book covers. Beyond that, we're not designers, so we look forward to seeing whatever ideas people can come up with.
