I read his book and then created a new cover that enhanced and illuminated his story. Alex's dog Johnny was a significant portion of the story, and a lot of the action took place in a moody wood.
I love being able to provide this service; reading the story helps SO MUCH to figure out WHAT details will be significant to the author, and it is an option not generally available for contests!")

This design is a combination of multiple images. First is the foreground element, the girl. The next one is the battered road. Then, I combined a few images of ruined buildings and structures to fill in the background. Lastly, the dark sky. The author wanted a simple, yet sophisticated cover to catch the eye of 12 to 16 year olds (primarily girls). The cover needed to be a mixture of the teenage romance novel type and the heist type, spy covers. Having the three teenagers on the cover wasn't necessary. However, it was the best thing to do so that the book would attract the right audience—teenagers. I aimed at keeping it simple, it needed to be clean, and uncluttered.")
