Things clicked for me when I thought to introduce an animal mascot for the brand. The slow loris, a primate native to Southeast Asia, seemed like such a good animal for this. There was a need to fill out the space with design elements and while searching for appropriate symbols (lotus flowers, geometric shapes) I went back to the source - the rice plant. While this didn't give much of a visual motif, the terraced rice fields were amenable to being made into repeatable and visually appealing abstract patterns.
I wanted bold colours, avoiding earth tones generally associated with organic foods but also trying to avoid common food package colour combinations.")

I responded to the craft beer ethos of the brand by embracing a comic-book inspired aesthetic to complement the independent and alternative vibe of craft brewing. In craft beers it is not unusual for the flavour to get front-and-center treatment, often with bold and colourful illustrations and I wanted to employ a similar design in dog treats which tend to be dominated by a singular design across all flavours.
The comic book influence informed the choice of fonts and inspired the 'Supergrain' callout on the back.
For Jabba the Mutt, the dog is seen using Jabba's signature hookah, while the background displays graphic forms seen in extended areas around Jabba's palace.")

The dark theming of the illustration allows it to fit into the background without competing with the branding of the beer company or the flavour name, instead being an interesting detail for the user to discover.
The tabular arrays for holding numerical information also play into the theme, referencing the inventory lists and timesheets that came to prominence during the industrial revolution.")
