Gabe_12 got their new wordpress theme design by running a design contest:
Dark/Creative Website for Privacy Advice (3 Pages)
Check out Gabe_12's WordPress theme design contest…
I help anyone interested in privacy and cybersecurity to take back some of the freedoms they've lost during the encroaching surveillance age. We talk about privacy in terms of practical strategies as well as politics and philosophy. We're NOT stale and law-firmy, but renaissance-minded and adventurous. I absolutely want visitors to see that we're professional and trustworthy, but also have some flair.
Start with my book cover, which might have the right colors and theme that I want to work with (though not necessarily!). I welcome other colors. The website vibe should be professional, serious, and on the darker side as befits privacy. The website should not come across as creative at the expensive of professionalism. I would like to spotlight my book and my newsletter. I want only three pages (for now). I want simplicity in design; less is more, with the most important page the landing page. For the minimalist/pure-color and shape website, it would have to fairly striking. You can rely on the book cover as the central image, if you think that would work. I'm just as interested in the other approach, which is to have a large image, possibly a landscape, on the top. I saw one submission with a futuristic cityscape, which really appealed to me. But I would be very eager to see what else you can find. The emotions and ideas I want to capture (as my book cover captured) are adventure, invocation of the infinite, thoughtfulness, perhaps isolation. I would like a website that breaks the mold a bit and doesn't seem like every other WordPress site--which I can easily recognize.
LANDING PAGE Landing page should have the book on it; there are some who have been using large images instead and that’s fine. Ideally we find some a way to get the book on the landing page though. The following text should be on the landing page. It REPLACES the text I wrote before: ---I’m Gabriel Custodiet. Here at Custodiet Privacy we believe that privacy is solely the jurisdiction of the individual. How could it be otherwise? Through our meticulously-researched book, newsletters, and videos, we provide to you the latest privacy news from around the world as well as the tools, behaviors, and frames of mind you need to protect yourself. For business inquires or to request speaking, please send your email to ______ (this will be a jpeg file and not text). I encourage you to sign up for my free newsletter, which offers privacy news, philosophy, and up-to-date practical advice on privacy and cybersecurity.--- BOOK PAGE - Large image of cover of book (attached) - Text: “Reclaim Your Privacy Today” - Link to purchase on Amazon - Example of a book page I like (https://daverubin.com/book/) - Brief description of a paragraph or two, which I will provide NEWSLETTER PAGE - Image of watchman figure (the person) from my cover along with text: “The Watchman Privacy Newsletter” - Text: “The last privacy newsletter you’ll need” - Overt subscription form: email address only (no name) - Explanation of what it provides (few sentences) along with a few bullet points (coming soon): - Example of “What you can expect from The Watchman Privacy Newsletter” followed by an image or PDF of the example - Final call to action: Subscribe here for free. You can cancel at any time.
What to avoid
Avoid the typical symbols of privacy: locks, matrix code, etc. I do not want a generic wordpress theme with my colors and images inserted. I notice these right away. I know it's some work to design something unusual, but I will not be picking as a winner a design that looks like everybody else. Trackers. I ideally will have a website without a single tracker as determined by UBlock Origin. Let me know if that's a problem. No clutter. I dislike stock website features: garish Amazon buttons, stock newsletter widgets, author photos with smiling faces (there will be no photos of people on this website). I don't think I want the images on the cover of my book to be in the background of the website either.
I will continue to update the brief and send out new website inspiration. Feel free to share them with me as well. Thank you.
