mstroeck got their new web page design by running a design contest:
Waterbear Capital needs a website to resonate with founders who are building the future
Check out mstroeck's Web page design contest…
Waterbear Ventures is a venture capital firm based in San Francisco and Vienna, Austria. We invest in early stage companies that are using important new technologies like synthetic biology, machine learning/AI, big data, new sensors and personal health tracking devices, and others. We are particularly interested in entrepreneurs with a deep science/engineering background who are working on tough problems with obviously large societal impact. We are focussing on healthcare and digital health, as well as artificial intelligence applications in this space.
I generally tend to like typography-focused, grid-like designs for content-heavy pages. I also enjoy bold, colorful designs. To me both styles, as well as a combination, could work for my brand. I think it's important that you as a designer work in a style that you're really comfortable in, and able to deliver your best work. I'm much more interested in high-quality, versatile design that you as a designer can be proud of than having super specific ideas where this should go. There is some existing material: Logo, business card, envelope, etc... I've attached a PDF of that to give you an overview of the general feel of the brand. The website is obviously more important and visible than the few things we already have, so feel free to branch out from that. Please make sure you use the right fonts - these are already defined in the attached brand guidelines, and unless there is a really good reason to change them I'd rather stick to them.
-) Homepage: This should either be some bold graphical/photographic statement (such as the "Speedinvest" example), just or a clean overview of what the site has to offer (like the "Index ventures" example. It definitely should have room for a short heading and an explanatory sentence/claim of some sort. -) Team & Partners (three people in the fund team): A clean and simple page showcasing the fund managers (with photos) plus partners (with logos or photos). -) Companies (Portfolio): An overview of all the companies we've invested in, with a list of either founder photos with small logos, or just company logos. -) About / Contact: Text/typo-heavy page where we can explain in some more detail (around 300 words) what we're all about, and how to contact us. -) Inidividual Portfolio Company Page (use https://www.mediclass.com/ or https://hi.health): A page explaining the story behind our investments. Sequoia's website is great at this: https://www.sequoiacap.com/company-story/dropbox-story -- feel free to be heavily inspired by them here :-)
What to avoid
Nothing that intents to take over how scrolling works. So no "you can only scroll by full pages"-designs. Don't move completly out of the colors defined in the existing materials (see attached PDF). Going way more monochrome is fine if the design is great, but be careful with going to far outside of existing colors, except for one-off elements that might need extra attention.
One thing that might definitely be a good idea is having a look at a couple of venture fund websites just to get a feel for what kind of content is usually on there: https://techcrunch.com/2010/02/02/top-vc-firm-websites/
