100miin got their new web page design by running a design contest:
Redesign of Korean e-Learning Site (4 Pages)
Check out 100miin's Web page design contest…
So-called Baby boomers in Korea who were born during the post-Korean War era. People in mid-40s~early 50s. They have growing buying power and are highly motivated to continue learning as an effort to change their career.
The name of company ‘100miin’ literally means “living to 100 beautifully”. It shows a vision of the company that helps people continue to have a balanced life as grow older. The concept of design has to be minimal and articulate.
[I. MAIN PAGE] We prefer the Apple style minimalist and refined design for this page. You may refer to the main page of the current site(http://www.100miin.com/) Surely we expect improved design from you. The main page is divided into 5 sections. 1. The Online Course : main slider, new course, popular courses) 2. The Offline Course : 'offline course' means a lecture that takes a place in a classroom setting with audience. We videotape, edit and upload it here. 3. Other Contents : '100miin Story', 'Applying for Instructor', 'Reviews', 'Notice' --> Refer to (2) of page 5 4. Advertising & Contact Info --> Refer to (1) of page 5 5. Categories --> Refer to (3) of page 5 ==> You might want to check out 'lynda.com' as a reference. [II. MY CLASSROOM] We consider this page as a heart of the site. After login, a customer usually skip browsing other lectures and directly visit the customized personal page which provides all necessary info and contents. It is like your own online study room where you can enjoy studying without interference. Needless to say, you have to put extra efforts in designing this page. - This page consists of 4 sections: 'My Classroom', 'Status', 'Registered Course'(Playlists), 'Finished Course'(course history). - There are supposed to be two taps('online courses' & 'offline course') right below 'Status' - The text box at the bottom of the page is an additional info about the course. [III. ALL COURSES] The 'all courses' page is to be separated into 4 sections: theme courses, instructors, package courses, free lectures, a list of courses. (1) 'new' & 'offline' : These are an indicator about the type of lecture. If it is a newly uploaded lecture, 'new' button should be shown. If it is an offline lecture, 'offline' button should be shown. (2) 'view cart' : You can name it as 'cart', not 'view cart'. 'checkout' : a button for proceeding to payment (3) 'search lectures' --> You can remove it. (4) 'registered hours' & 'sales' & 'clicks' : There are sorting options. You can rename 'registered hours' as 'registered time'. Default sorting option is 'registered time'. - The most important thing in this page is to align menu. There is a menu for all lectures on the left side. Right next to it, there are all available lectures. Please remember that more lectures will continue to be served. So there should be more space for the upcoming lectures. - Please take a look at the gray tab right under 'All courses : This page is an area where you can see all the courses'. Before login, only 'all lectures' tab is supposed to be shown. After login, there should be one more tab 'my lectures' to be shown. - You might be wondering what the 'W', 'P', 'L' icons right next to the small rounded instructor portrait mean. Those are an indicator for a type of lectures. There are 3 categories for the entire lectures: Work, Play, Learn. W for Work, P for Play, L for Learn respectively. [IV. COURSE DETAILS] The 'course details' page provides key information about the lecture. People make a decision whether they will pay to watch the lecture or not based on the given information on this page. That means this page requires your extra efforts. (1) 'course details' : brief description of the lecture (page 11) (2) information about the name of instructor, price, duration of the lecture, etc. (page 11) (3) sample lecture video player (page 11) (4) 'curriculum' (page 11) (1) 'Other Lectures of the Instructor (or Related Lectures)' (page 12) (2) 'Review' : review of the lecture from the customer who already took this lecture (page 12) - Please pay attention to a position of (2) 'Review' (page 12). You may change the layout of it from the attached storyboard. A new customer's decision to pay for the lecture will definitely depend on the reviews from the other customers. Thus, you need to design it more attractive. - (2) 'Review' (page 12) needs to include reviewer's ID, reviewer's thumbnail image, review, a button for reply to review and sharing, and posting time, etc. You may refer to the review page of our current site.(http://www.100miin.com/course/curri-on-w-11/ --> Scroll all the way to down to see reviews of this lecture) - Please come up with a good design for the info of the instructor which is a gray box with the portrait image of the instructor on top of it. - A design of (4) 'curriculum' is also important.
What to avoid
1. 'Online Courses' and 'Offline Courses' must be distinguished. 2. 'Course Evaluation'(Review) must have a good readability. 3. Please check out the attached file 'SB.zip' below. There are two language version of storyboard files both in English and Korean. There are only for your reference. You have a freedom to use any layouts, especially for the main page. 4. The color of logo can be either olive green or black. 5. Pay attention to the color of the 'Theme Courses'. 6. Too much effects of elegant decor such as gradients, round corners, pea vines, etc. not necessary 7. The grid is important. Focus on an arrangement of the contents.
Dear Contestants First of all, we must our appreciation for participating in this content. We are eLearning company in Korea. Since English is not our first language, there can be a language barrier between us. If you suffer to understand what we try to say, don't hesitate to ask us again. We will do our best to make things clear for you. Our current site(100miin.com) was made of WordPress. For some reason, we are experiencing problems like the slow access, rollback. We concluded that a performance of the site will not be greatly improved unless there is a complete renewal. Your design will be used for the new site. Basically the new site will be similar to the previous one in terms of frame and menu. However, we want much better layouts. For your reference, we attached several zip files below. You will find some layouts which were not used for the current site. You may use them if necessary. This is not a contest to show off your design skills. Please try to figure out what we desire for the new site first. The more you understand what we want, the better your design will be. Several other things that you need to know. 1. 'SB.zip' has two different language version of storyboard(English and Korean). The original storyboard is, of course, in Korean. We translate it into English for English speaking contestants.(Forgive our poor translation though) You need to pay attention to a length of label in both storyboards. If a length of English label is longer than the one in Korean version, you may shorten it. 2. Our target market is Korean people in their 40s. They tend to be conservative and don't welcome unfamiliar design. For that reason, we expect you to increase readability of the site rather than too radical ideas. 3. The portrait image or instructors are of importance. If you check out our current site, you will probably understand it. Many people say that the main page of our site is really eye-catching and that is what makes us different from other Korean eLearning sites. Please make it look ever better for us. 4. We'd like to communicate with all contestants. If you leave a comment or inquiry, we will try to answer it asap. If not, please be patient. There is a time difference between us. We will get back to you as soon as we come to work.
