How JonathanH started their web page design journey
Who are you known as?
Python for iOS
Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
I have 8 iOS Apps. Each App is essentially identical except each one is for a different version of the Python Programming Language (python.org). The Apps are "Python x.y for iOS" where "x.y" is the Python version (2.5, 2.6, 2.7, 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4), collectively called "Python for iOS". The target audience ranges from people wanting to learn how to program in Python to veteran Python experts. The large majority of visitors, however, are people who know a little Python but want to advance their Python programming skills. Education institutions are another target audience for this site. Several Universities already use the Python for iOS App in classes and provide a copy to their students to use on their personal iOS device or a device provided by the institution.
What industry do you think your business is most related to?
What do you have in mind for the style and theme of the web page?
I want to utilize the Python colors (Blue/Yellow) in a tasteful way that isn't overdone. Buttons and menu items should have a look and feel that is similar to the iOS GUI as most visitors will be using an iOS device. I think a nice fixed width (monospace) font would give the page a look similar to that of a code editor/console (i.e. putty/vim/Xcode/Visual Studio), however, this is not a design requirement. These are all just ideas I have thought about but I am very open to all different kinds of designs. I do want a light on dark (dark background & light text) look however, unless you have a dark on light design that you think will change my mind, in which case, I wouldn't mind see'ing it and I will still give feedback. The specific colors used to obtain a light on dark look are up to the designer.
The main index page for my site desperately needs to be redesigned. I would like it to outline the App's main features and have buttons/links for purchasing the Apps from the App Store. A slideshow of screenshots, some user feedback quotes, and maybe space for a demo video would all be nice for the page content. Ideally, the design would be easy to scale up/down as most of the visitors will be using an iPad or iPhone to view the site.
What to avoid
Things like Flash, iFrames, and anything else that cannot be viewed or used properly on a native iOS (iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch/etc) Safari browser need to be avoided.
Lots of images and screenshots of the Apps and other misc images can be found here: http://pythonforios.com/images/ (or, http://pythonforios.com/img/ if for some reason the /images/ url does not work)
Educational institutions receive a 50% off discount when buying bulk copies of a Python for iOS App so I would really like a graphic or something similar that advertises this discount somewhere on the page.
