custodyx got their new web page design by running a design contest:
Make this tech-focused job board stand out
Check out custodyx's Web page design contest…
We're a job board where we aggregate all the remote tech jobs and filter by category to make it easy to find a remote programming job.
We just did a usability study, and the feedback we got was that our current site was too plain / bland and that it doesn't have enough colors or enough contrast. Some people appreciated the simplicity though. So I'm thinking that a lot of the current structure works, but that we could improve it to make it look better. This applies to mobile and desktop. Another feedback we got was that it was a lot of scrolling, especially on mobile. It might be nice to see how we could tighten each job card up a bit. We have three different job packages, where the middle and top one have a blue background. I would be open to more variation between the job packages, and also possibly having a fourth option. I'm not saying that I necessarily want more variations, but that could be an easy way to introduce more colors and variety -- as long as it's obvious for someone to distinguish what's the "best" from what's "better" and what's simply "good". In terms of design specifics, I'm not sure that I'm completely tied to the gray background. I wonder if having a white background we could do more with the cards? Or, at least, I had a concern with the gray background. I'm not saying I definitely don't like it, just that I've wondered whether we could do a lot more to focus on the cards if we had a white background.
The goal for the homepage and category pages are to be able to discover the perfect job that you're looking for. It's the right technology that you work in, etc. The goal of the job detail page is to clearly explain the description and make it easy for someone to apply. We also want people to be able to easily find the technologies that they are interested in working in.
What to avoid
We don't have a lot of structured data around each job because we're scraping them from a few different sources, so it may be hard to highlight things like salary, experience, etc. Even though sometimes that's in the job description, it's unstructured data. So we won't be able to highlight a lot of other things on the job cards themselves.
I like clean design. Things that are crazy busy aren't really my style. I like everything to be usable. This current design is too plain though. We got this design done from an interaction designer I've worked with on another business, and then we spent a year building out the functionality of the website. Then we did a small un-moderated usability study, and one of the concerns random people had was that it was too bland. Oh, I'd also say not to use more than one custom font, for loading times. If you really felt like you needed two, that could maybe work, but I like to keep the pages loading as fast as possible (with the fewest flashes of text styling). And, of course, the design has to work for desktop & mobile. The winner will likely be invited to a 1 on 1 project for a logo design after.
