How Jinyoung started their web page design journey
This website contains the complete contents of the 12-volume Jewish Encyclopedia, which was originally published between 1901-1906. The Jewish Encyclopedia, now a part of the public domain, contains over 15,000 articles and illustrations.
This online version contains the unedited contents of the original encyclopedia which is "highly regarded for its scholarship" and much of the material is still considered of "value to researchers in Jewish History." [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_Encyclopedia]
The design should be clean, research/exploration use focused, and elude to its scholarly background.
Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
The site has visitors from over 200 countries, but most heavily used by visitors in the US/UK/Canada, i.e. English speaking world. Obviously, due to the nature of the content the audience will likely be an English speaking person of Jewish heritage or someone who is doing research on Jewish history.
We are currently working on a new version of the online JewishEncyclopedia.com. Along with new features, we would like to give it a fresh new look. There are many well illustrated images in the encyclopedia, please explore our site and use images in the design. Don't go crazy with using too many images, clean and scholarly look is desired.
Home page: should have a brief block introducing the site and its background. In the new design, we would like various "pods" that offer articles to explore. Much like: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page. Possible "pods" will be: featured articles, blog post/announcements, trending popular articles, in the news, images from je, recent comments.
Search/Directory page: Currently there are two ways to explore/search for content. Via the directory interface (i.e. http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/d…p?letter=u or click on the a-z links at the top left) and via the search function (i.e. http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/s…earchOpt=0. The design of this page should be thought through as to what the search results should look like, what potentially could be provided on the right, what could possibly be shown on the mouse over of a search result (see google results mouse over).
Article page: Probably the most important page. Article pages have various distinct pieces: title, table of contents, author, images, bibliography, and we have whole page scans of the originals volumes. This along with ads should be well formed together. See example of a comprehensive article: http://jewishencyclopedia.heroku.co…ted-states.
