The design was simple, minimalistic, yet powerful. Excellent responsiveness from the designer as well. I will be a repeat customer!
How SUZANNE VINER started their web page design journey
THE ADVERTISING ARCHIVES
The Advertising Archives is the world's largest collection of British and American Press ads and Magazine art. Like many great businesses, the company developed from a passion for collecting old magazines and an appreciation of the "art of the illustrator" in the golden age before photography became the norm. We span the last 150 years and include magazine ads, covers & story illustrations, posters, postcards, record covers, book jackets, cigarette cards and all manner of ephemera. Our clients include newspapers, magazines & book publishers; TV & film companies; calendar & card suppliers; interior designers; academics; collectors; researchers & all manner of designers.
We launched our own website in 2005, which is driven by a dedicated Picture Library management system. This is in the process of being updated to include additional cutting edge functionality and will be even more fabulous to use. Our current site attracts positive comments from many users, both business & consumer, for the ease of use, funky look of the site, as well as the vast selection of retro imagery, but we realise that it needs improvement. We see the management system update as an ideal opportunity to give the site a more contemporary feel (ironic, since we are dealing with historic pictures!) We are passionate about what we do & hope to convey our enthusiasm through our digital interface!
Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
The site must be welcoming to all our existing clients who often are stressed and working under deadline pressure. It should also look intriguing to potential new clients who find us via search engines, by recommendation or through our other marketing efforts. We supply digital images for use in publishing, as a backdrop to period films and TV programmes, for use in funky cards, retro calendars, in-store display, packaging, retro feel products. We also sell original art as many of the illustrators whose work we hold, are widely collected (Rockwell, Leyendecker, Bateman for example) Our clients are young & old & from all four corners of the globe but have in common a keen visual appreciation. The range of imagery will be described in the "Collections" drop down with links to image groups. The range of services/potential uses will be expanded in the "Services" drop down.
The site is managed by a dedicated technical company so you don't need to worry about the way it all works....they will do the technical stuff just create a new look for the home page, the search page, the help page. First have a good look at our site http://www.advertisingarchives.co.uk Our "logo" is the 1950s "ketchup woman" that you see.
-In the new look site she can be used differently but should appear in the same way on each page.
-The current typeface should be changed.
-Suggest colour scheme reflecting our retro feel.
-The Home page will have navigation buttons that will then appear in the same place on each page of the site. There will be 7 main ones: Home; Login; Services; Collections; Search; Contact us; Help
- On the Home page there will be images which will rotate in a slide show format. You choose where these will be. Register on our site & download previews.
-Suggest a help page format, which might include quirky images.
-The home page should not be too fussy for established users but at the same time intrigue new visitors & encourage them to probe deeper!
