The primary goal of the home page is to get users signed up and using the service. Simplicity is paramount. Think of Groupon's homepage where all there is (basically) is a text field for an email address. The user can find out more by clicking links but it should not take away from the, “easy as 1,2,3” approach.
We use words like simplicity, elegance, understated to describe the design we want. That's not to say flat, boring, plain. It must still be visually interesting even though we don't want much content or hundreds of links.
We like the jQuery that hides/shows more information on the home page. We have used the same concept throughout the site. So your design should incorporate the underlying text fields - the part that becomes visible when clicked (in our case text boxes that are three across, two across, or one centered). If you have a better layout, please don't hesitate to show it.
