I'm quite happy with the top half of the design - the large photo, the logo area, and the top nav. But the content area (the left column, center column, and right column) would look a lot better with a design overhaul.
Everything in the white boxes and even the background below the white divider line is fair game. We can even shorten the copy of blog posts (by putting more of the posts behind the "read the entry" link).
Would be great to add an informational footer as well (a la http://www.thinkgeek.com). For now, a sitemap could be the content (mouseover the top nav items for the text).
Note that there are six background images - they automatically rotate on the website depending on the time of day. Dawn, sunrise, daytime, sunset, dusk, and night. To see them on the website, temporarily change your computer's clock and refresh.
I've also attached an initial rough idea of what a single blog post could look like. It's mostly stolen from http://www.breakingcopy.com though, so it needs to be customized for sure.
