NBPC needed a new web page design and created a contest on 99designs.
A winner was selected from 12 designs submitted by 4 freelance designers.
In February of 2010, at the wake of the one-month anniversary of Haiti’s earthquake, three media makers from the National Black Programming Consortium embarked on a journey to explore what remains and sustains the survivors. From the Dominican Republic, the team combed through the dynamics of a border bursting at the seams and traveled into Haiti with volunteers seeking to reverse the long history of animosity between Haitians and Dominicans. In Haiti, the team traveled from the severely stricken south to the plentiful plains of the north to explore the impact of the massive exodus of survivors on the rural populations. Along the road, the team worked with artists communities and witnessed their efforts to make a difference.
Now the team will share their stories via a dynamic online initiative -- Haiti: One Day One Story.
NBPC's work is focused on developing, producing and funding television and now online programming about the black experience and, since our founding in 1979, we have provided hundreds of broadcast hours documenting African American history, culture and experience to public television. We have also created several online only content initiatives, including a project with students at HBCUs which accompanied the re-release of Eyes on the Prize; a project about the Katrina recovery effort; and a Ford Foundation-funded collaboration, the Masculinity Project.
The audience for BlackPublicMedia.org is an audience interested in creative social issue content online, age range from about 24 - 44, a large African American constituency, and an almost even gender split. Likely living in urban areas and used to sharp aesthetics which also have complicated artistry. Smart, hip, international.
To fully capture the visual and inspiring stories in this series, we are looking for a video and audio player grid for our website at BlackPublicMedia.org. This web interface should help users navigate and play both video and audio assets without leaving a central page. The design should be flexible and easily integrated into a site framework that is mostly built on PHP.
The design specs for the grid graphical elements should be easily developed using JQuery, please see the following links for a compilation of functionality:
Rollover on grid -> http://www.freespeech.org/node/2107
Lightbox/Thickbox effect on Watch Video link -> http://www.denverkidsinc.org/
Standard Vertical Carrousel -> http://www.denveropenmedia.org/
The grid will be similar in navigation and functionality to the grid found here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/…=114013402.
