clarkeyyc got their new web page design by running a design contest:
Design a polished home/inner page for large, national laboratory

AGAT Laboratories is a highly specialized, Canadian-based company that provides laboratory services worldwide. With over 35 years of experience, coast to coast locations and over 1,200 employees Canada-wide, AGAT Laboratories is the most geographically and technically diversified laboratory in Canada. Our scientists are highly skilled and specialized in the fields of chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, geology, engineering and specialty analysis.
As a rule, lab websites kind of suck. There is a tremendous amount of industries and service categories to serve, so the number of pages is fairly enormous with most labs needing secondary and third-level menus to get to all the types of things they analyze. The current AGAT site actually organizes information pretty well with both the top menus, side menu and sub menu, and the inner section horizontal menu. However, the site is outdated and not responsive. The site needs to be able to look scientific, professional, and reflect the size of the company (large national brand with a dozen large labs and over 100 pickup depots). It should reflect the leadership that AGAT has gained over the last 35 years across Canada. It needs to be able to lead people through a logical (while a bit complicated) path to get to the page they need to see. For example, a user might be coming and looking for the Agri-Foods (Service type) > Food Testing (Category) > Microbiology (Final Service Page). Menus and sub-menus are a must.
Home page and Inner page. Please use www.agatlabs.com and www.agatlabs.com/energy/rock-properties/reservoir-characterization.cfm as guides. The home page should lend itself to an updated look that is responsive, has the current elements of the current home page centred around users being able to navigate to the area they want to go to easily. The inner page should allow for a lot wider content without the constraint of two side bars. Currently, our content area is pretty crowded so if we ever want to introduce a new module, we have to cram it into 800px. I would prefer only one sidebar logically laid out with a good breadcrumb thought through. One thing that is MASSIVELY MISSING from this site is a clear Call to Action button on inner pages. If you're on a Reservoir Characterization page, you should be able to "Click here to order your Reservoir Characterization analysis" or something similar. Other things of note on this page are the (a) eServices login (b) related documents, and the ability to always navigate back to their complicated service offerings.
What to avoid
Not Needed Elements: Social Icons Stock images are okay to use but please keep the costs down and/or use the plentiful images already throughout this site. The company clearly has yellow as their logo colour And, I am sorry for all the designers out there who have nightmares from what I'm about to say, but this client does not have a standardized logo with standardized rules. The globe appears most of the time, often farther or nearer to the AGAT words than other times. Sometimes, it is cut off. Sigh. At least the "AGAT" in yellow with black behind it is somewhat standardized. No, I do not have a high quality logo. I've provided all I've ever gotten from them. Truly, I am sorry. The colours on the side (Teal for Agri-Foods; Leather for Energy; Forest Green for Environment; etc.) are not standardized. They can stay the same or be changed, but there should be something to distinguish these areas.
Please be aware that for approximately six months, the new site design is going to be used to launch some new modules on subdomains. This means that the new design and the old design need to be somewhat complementary. As much as I need things to change, if someone navigates to the new site design from the old site design, they need to not feel like they are no longer with AGAT. There should be at least a small touch of some logical connection between the two sites. Please spend at least 5 minutes reading the about section and one more more inner pages of the site so you understand what type of company this is. I am going to submit your designs to them and hopefully expand this project following. I would like someone who understands what type of company this is.
