How Keith Steele started their web page design journey

Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
Our web sites assist scientists, researchers, and natural resource managers implement large scale environmental research, monitoring, and evaluation efforts. Most of the could work is based in rivers and streams, but could be terrestrial monitoring as well.
What industry do you think your business is most related to?
What do you have in mind for the style and theme of the web page?
We wish to update the visual design for the above two web sites. The navigation and content will remain largely the same, but we want a new and common look and feel that is more modern looking, simple, clean/open and less dark than the current designs.
1. Need a new home page that can serve both sites and provide navigation into both.
2. Need a template to replace this page: https://www.monitoringmethods.org/P…tails/2164. Need a more modern tab treatment and would like the content area to scale horizontally rather than being fixed width
3.There is a map explorer page (https://www.monitoringresources.org…orer/Index) that needs to be reworked to reduce the size of the header (maximize map elements) and to add some style to the functionality in the left and right margins. Currently the form elements are too plain and we could use better navigation between the map and the grid (the tabs aren't that obvious to users).
What to avoid
Refrain from color schemes not commonly observed in nature.
You will notice on these sites that there are "areas" you can select by clicking "Apps". These navigate to different areas of the two sites, but we want to do away with these - they are confusing. The navigation elements will be merged into a single unified application.
