timh1 got their new web page design by running a design contest:
Complicated business model needs clear communication

Cosmetics & Beauty
We manufacture organic soap for small businesses to sell under their own custom label. For customers able to afford our contract production minimums, we help formulate and then make the product to spec. These customers order between 500 and 10,000 units. For customers needing smaller quantities (for example, many people just want 100 bars/bottles to resell at farmers markets or to accompany another product they make themselves), we offer a selection of pre-made/pre-stocked bar and liquid soap, soap boxes, and labels so they can create a DIY final product. In addition to all this, we sell bulk soap products and raw ingredients to a market of home soapmakers and small business soapmakers.
Overall: A better, more interesting header (dev2 currently uses the default header from our template) ----- This is our primary landing page for all soap inquiry and needs to be perfect. It needs to quickly present 1) what custom label soap is; 2) the two options for ordering. I've included a document showing different approaches in the docs section. The layout provided in these approaches is not a design guide (please redesign it). However, it does show the fundamental organization of the information and the copy (the content/information basically needs to stay the same). ----- PAGE 2: Option One (Mix & Match Online) I've included a document with two approaches in the docs section so you can see the content/copy needed. Neither design is important to us, but the content is. ----- PAGE 3: Option Two (Custom Made To Order Soap) I've included two drafts of this content in the docs section so you can see the content/copy needed. Again, neither design is important to us, but the content is. ----- HOMEPAGE: The current dev2 homepage is truly just a placeholder to see how the slider works. Our homepage the most challenging page. It needs to address all customer groups (all navigation sections of our site), but the primary emphasis needs to be soap. It also needs to draw people in. There are two parts to the hompage. The hook for our service ("we have everything to meet your soap needs regardless of whether you have a farmer's market booth, a small store, a 1,000 square foot warehouse space, a 10,000 square foot space, are the buyer for a larger corporation, or just make your own soap at home) needs to be above the fold. All product info can be below the fold (or you can show us how to brilliantly integrate it!) For a perfect example, see 99designs... The homepage needs to be a welcoming snapshot of the entire site (like an executive summary of a business plan, you write/build it at the end). -----
What to avoid
Our primary navigation cannot have drop-downs. It is simple and needs to stay that way for organization. Each primary nav link leads to a landing page for that subject (basically, each nav link leads to a unique section of the site and is not just a product menu). ----- Never any pastels (even though one of our drafts contains a terrible one to match the label of the stock photo soap we're using...) ----- We cannot look "handmade." ----- Regarding stock images: We'll provide almost all product photography. OK to include some stock for vibe/atmosphere. But, please, no small business related shots of people shaking hands or anything like that. ----- Please let us know where you envision good product photography and what you envision that photo being (we'll set it up and take it). In the meantime, please use a representative placeholder image.
