markWU got their new web page design by running a design contest:
Aerial Data Collection Service Needs Everything, Starting with Website
Check out markWU's Web page design contest…
Kestrel Data is an aerial imaging service provider that performs traffic, infrastructure and construction surveys for engineers, planners and project managers. Our principal means of data collection is with drones but for larger scale projects we use fixed wing aircraft. Our primary clients are private engineering firms and public agencies, including state DOTs and FHWA. While I said "construction" as industry, it's more professional services in the engineering industry.
Need to blow away possible clients and possible pilot subcontractors with content. We have hours of awesome drone footage and imagery available, focused primarily traffic/roadways. Keep things bright and approachable, and yet have a high-tech edge. I want there to be a focus on our process: clients specify their needs (from a selected list of applications), we pick the approach (UAV or fixed-wing), we deliver data (with sample deliverables showing). We need the ability to add/edit the content of those three stages as we cater to new industries, add new methods, or add new deliverables. I think we could use an improved logo as well, as it's awfully close to some other drone companies already in the market. If the prototype uses some stock drone imagery as proof of concept, I'll provide our own material to put in there for the final deployment. Also need a contact area with specific fields that describe project requirements and allow us to more easily build our CRM database. Simple "about us" with a reiteration of process and focus on who our team is. This is the starting stage of a long branding process that will involve business cards, marketing materials, conference banners, etc. so we want someone who's in it for the long haul.
**PLEASE NOTE THESE ARE ALL SEPARATE PAGES** Home Page: -Top banner that can play images/video. -Details the process as described above. -Has a section for how to become pilot for Kestrel that highlights the benefits of flying with us with a bullet list, and a light contact form to inquire for more information (name, email, phone number, comment). -Small section of 1-3 recent blog posts from our blog page of completed projects/updates. -Small "about us" blip with a "learn more" link to direct to that page. -Some way of presenting our current clients (see our website). Grayscaling their logos so it has a clean look would be great. I want it to sync with the rest of the site design. Check out skycatch to see what I mean. -The priority order from top to bottom is the banner, a written about us blip to tell people what we do, the process of how we work, clients, blog posts of recent projects (3 max, the rest will be on a separate blog page), and then how to become a pilot. It's ok if you have some of these sections side-by-side rather than stacked. Industries Page: Talks about who we serve and what we can provide: construction, traffic engineering, civil engineering to start, with the ability to add more later. I'll provide written content at a later date. Work Page: Blog style page with some CMS that will allow us to add portfolio sections and describe deliverables. Since every project is different, it's nearly impossible to showcase our flexibility in a fixed page with a rigid list of services/deliverables. Posts will allow us to constantly add new ideas and project info so people can find us on the web when something similar comes up. 1-3 of these should be highlighted on the main page. About Page: Where our name came from, who's involved.
What to avoid
Stay away from dark colors. Our industry is laid back and friendly, so the page shouldn't scare anyone off. Skycatch does a great job with this. No drop down menus or complex navigation. I only want page tabs and to need to scroll down a page to see all content. No annoying "pop up" content. Everything should be fixed/built into the page. Don't use red/blue color scheme as that's how one of our close partners is already designed; don't want it to look like we're copying them.
