Book cover service

//. BEFORE WE START

1. Feel free to request this Service, but please *do not* secure payment on the auto-generated invoice. I am selective in the projects I take on. Let's discuss first.

2. Please only request this Service if you're serious about working with me. I'm not interviewing for a position or seeking advice on my process. My portfolio is proof of my capabilities.

3. I can only connect via video call to clients who have secured funding on 1-to-1 projects. I get too many inquiries otherwise. Please explain your project first in text. If I accept and payment is secured, we can then connect via Zoom or Meet, if you prefer to work that way.

//. THIS SERVICE

I'm mainly a designer of logomarks, but if inspired I like also to branch out into other areas of graphic design, including book covers. Where possible I like to avoid stock entirely. I am a fan of minimalism and efficiency in design. There are many styles of book cover design that I will not do, but if your project aligns to my aesthetic, I'll be happy to bring my unique approach to bear.

In general, I like more serious projects. Fun and lightweight is not interesting to me.

When I take on a project I will produce two directions. I may provide more, but the service is based on a maximum of two. Usually these are produced sequentially. I will go with the core of my response to your brief in the first direction. When you pick a direction, I will provide up to three revisions. Further revisions are billable separately.

If you’re ready, let’s get to work.

//. ABOUT ME

10+ years experience as a designer, working with hundreds of clients. Distinctive vision. 15+ years experience as a senior editor with Egypt's flagship broadsheet. Formal qualifications: BA (1:1), MA (Distinction) and PhD. I have taught in universities on four continents, including Brown University as a Fulbright scholar. Resident in Cairo 23 years.

//. WHY WORK DIRECT?

Here’s the truth: Contests are a terrible way to source design. Why? Because designers don’t have time to invest when they work for free. You will get 5% of their mental energy at best, recycling existing designs without pause or thought. It’s Whac-A-Mole. In direct projects, where funds are secured, you get 100%. You get a designer invested in your company, its story, its strategic success, and its image. If you care about your company, work direct.

What you will get

The service is for softcover or hardcover book design. If both are required, or if ebook format is also required, this is available at additional cost.

TERMS & CONDITIONS:

Clients indicate that they agree to the following on securing a given project invoice:

— In all projects, unless agreed and budgeted in advance, I will produce two directions or design concepts. I may provide more than two, but satisfying the project Terms & Conditions is based on a maximum of two. Premium packages, where a larger number of initial concepts is provided, are available to clients with appropriate budgets. Designs concepts are normally delivered sequentially. If the first concept is declined, a second will be presented. If neither design direction is accepted, further design concepts are billable separately. After the initial project Terms & Conditions have been met, it is within my discretion whether to continue or not. With a chosen direction, I will provide up to three revisions. Further revisions are billable separately and discretionary.
— As standard, I retain the right to reproduce, publish and display deliverables from 1-to-1 projects in my portfolios, websites, and other media or exhibits for the purposes of recognition of creative excellence and/or professional advancement, and to be credited with authorship of the deliverables in connection with such uses. Private projects will be considered, but must be agreed in advance of securing payment on a project. Private projects are charged at a 30% premium on top of the price of the project.
- In the event of a change in business name mid-project, the client agrees to pay the open project in full, whether it reached completion or not. A business name change essentially resets any work previously done. This cost will be met by the client. The client is welcome to send a new invite for the new business name.
— The client agrees that in the event a project is canceled for any reason other than the designer's failure to comply with the project Terms & Conditions set forth, no refund will be issued and no rights to any work done within the project will be transferred. In the event of a full or partial refund initiated by the designer, or a client-cancelled project, the client agrees that the project did not reach completion and forfeits the written review of the project. Honest reviews of completed projects are welcomed.
— Turnaround refers to the average time taken rather than a commitment that all work is completed within that time. Rush projects will be considered, but at a 30% premium on top of the standard service price of the project. Project duration may not exceed 30 days from time of securing payment. Any project that exceeds 30 days must be paid in full, whether completed or not. Further work will be billable separately and will be undertaken on a discretionary basis.
— Final files are print ready in CMYK color scheme. All fonts are converted to outline. Editable source files can be provided to clients that have licensed versions of any fonts used, and where the client has a licensed version of the design software used. As of 2020, I mostly work in Serif's Affinity Suite. Export of editable Adobe Illustrator source files will be discretionary and billed separately.
