This proposal along with many others was ultimately passed over by the design agency hired by baseball star George Valera to create an identity that would cement his rising profile within the sport. But I like it, and didn't like the mark the agency had me recreate instead, so I'm showcasing this design though unused.
What interested me when this design emerged is that through a simple reference to the initial of Valera's first name, he could be associated with baseball, and in fact become an iconic representation of it, and synonymous with it.
The "g" is amended and becomes a figure swinging a bat, with a ball flying off top-right.
Valera himself is a very unassuming figure: humble, and soft-spoken. While the sport is surrounded by the hard edge of a standard sports aesthetic, this mark, while different, spoke more to his character while gently taking possession of baseball itself.
