Set in the transformational four decades from the “Roaring Twenties” through the 1950s post-war industrial boom, The Queen of El Dorado conveys two parallel and interlinked stories: One of a young Caribbean immigrant – Suzette Baptiste – who, in pursuit of a career as a jazz musician, must navigate the hazards wrought by the Great Depression, the symbiosis between jazz clubs and organized crime, and the pervasive gender and cultural roadblocks of the times; the other of the advent, rise, heyday, and decline of the legendary business and entertainment enclave on the east side of Detroit known as “Paradise Valley.”
