Möbius Microfarms is a small, Portland-based aquaponics company focused on growing microgreens. Microgreens are simply young plants - a bit further along than sprouts - like kale, basil, arugula, or cabbage. We sell them live and ready to harvest at that stage because of the nutrient density. Our audience are people living in cities with average or above incomes. They buy our microgreens because they appreciate the easy way to add a dose of nutrients to their diets, because they value visual appeal (microgreens make a beautiful garnish), because they want to support sustainable, hyperlocal food production, and/or because they are curious about new, innovative foods - and of course because of the flavor.
What's your vision?
We are looking to create a box made from thick paper / cardboard. No top/lid (see attached examples) to hold individual units of live microgreens (still growing in media, not pre-harvested). The dimensions will be: 4 inches wide x 3.5 inches deep x 3 inches tall (measured on the interior of the box) The design needs to feature: • Name of variety (micro arugula, micro basil, or spicy salad mix) • Company name & logo (attached) • Origin / differentiators: Grown from non-GMO seed on an aquaponic farm within 3 miles from here. Aquaponics is an ecosystem-like growing method where plants and fish are cultivated together. Aquaponics uses 90% less water than soil-based methods and does not use any synthetic nutrients or pesticides. • Care & harvest instructions: Lightly water. Do not refrigerate. Snip just below the leaves with knife or scissors. Enjoy right away for maximum nutrition. • How to enjoy: we may offer several suggestions here or a recipe. Placeholder text: Microgreens really go on anything. Simply add a handful of microgreens to your favorite smoothie or salad, or put them on pasta, sandwiches, or eggs. Also great on crackers with a little goat cheese or hummus! • Learn more at mobiusmicrofarms.com • UPC (bottom) Context: The box will be placed on freestanding tables in supermarkets, and we will also take them to demos and other events where they’ll be seen at about hip height. In case stores don’t have that kind of space available, the design also needs to work at eye level and higher. It needs to compel people to pick up the box and find out more. We are looking for a design that can be slightly but clearly modified to indicate the variety of microgreens in the box, perhaps via a different color accent. We like the idea of having icons and/or illustrations for the differentiators, care instructions and/or usage suggestions - open to other design solutions, too. For example, it would be outstanding to have a simple graphic that illustrates the concept of aquaponics: the fish provide the nutrients for the plants and the plants clean the water for the fish. It's a beautiful, closed-loop, growing method that functions like an ecosystem. The fact that the greens are aquaponically grown needs to be highlighted on the packaging; it’s important to the store where we are planning to launch. We want this design to look modern, sophisticated, clear, energetic, straightforward, and down to earth, appropriately positioning the microgreens as a high value specialty food item, comparable to artisan condiments, dark chocolate, drinking vinegar etc. We don’t want homey, nostalgic, cute, frilly, cluttered, boring. The design should make sense within the context of our website, too - you can see it at mobiusmicrofarms.com. Colors we like: green hues, warm orange (as on the website), deep blue - possibly on a kraft-paper colored background (we are not attached to that though). Colors that we think would not fit: pink, purple.
