This project involved a challenging consumer packaging concept. The goal was to create something virtually indistinguishable from a 19th century elixir label, with authentic typography and an alluring color story. In our experience, this level of design tends to be a tall order, even for large design firms.
This was a Gold level contest and 4 designers submitted concepts. Of these, Calavera was the only designer who immediately grasped our vision, nailing the basic idea on the first try. Calavera was also quick to submit numerous minor revisions at our request, each an improvement over the last.
We couldn't be happier with the final result. It has been a pleasure working with this consummate professional. We look forward to future projects with 99designs and to working with Calavera and other talented designers.

Looking for product label for a craft distilled spirit called "Jersey Lightning". Jersey Lightning is a colloquial name for Applejack - an apple brandy that was widely produced and consumed throughout the United States from the 18th to early 20th centuries. At one point in time, New Jersey was the largest producer of Applejack in America. An unaged, cheaper, and often harsh variety of Applejack produced in New Jersey came to be known as "Jersey Lightning". I am interested in bringing this distilled spirit back to life and capturing both the heritage and bravado of the liquor and the state for which it is named. I am looking for a label which looks both old and new. It should be artisanal without being snobby - this is Jersey after all. It should reflect heritage and history, all while being relevant and hip. Some ideas would be to use an old script, sepia tones, woodblock, Colonial Americana, etc. but with a modern twist. Also, the state of New Jersey is shaped somewhat like a lightning bolt. Maybe including a lightning bolt and/or incorporating the outline of the state would be interesting. Or superimposing a lightning bolt over or within the outline of the state. Just some ideas, I am open to new concepts as well.
The label should include the following text:
Jersey Lightning (bold or large font)
Applejack Cyder Spirits (smaller or non-bold text)
