Gorstak Craft Brewery
Description of the product
We are a small craft brewery from northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina. Our name (Eng. Highlander) is a tribute to our ancestors, to their highlander resilience, courage, persistence, kindness and simplicity. Our logo is centered around the oak tree - holly tree in our pagan Slavic and Christian traditions, a symbol of hope, gathering, and unbreakable connection with nature. The label should be centered around these elements. Our beers are unfiltered natural beers without any artificial adjuncts made only from purest ingredients traditionally used in brewing (grains, hops, water, yeast) but also medicinal and aromatic plants, honey and spices. Pale ale is our flagship beer and makes 50% of all our sales. It has plenty aroma and medium bitterness from four hop varieties used and some biscuitty and caramel notes from barley malts.
Description of the product target audience
People aged 25 - 50, both sexes, usually employed or at university with income slightly above the average salary in the country. Beer is sold in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Switzerland but the plan is to expand it to neighboring Serbia and Croatia, even possibly USA. Our customers are mostly urban people with higher awareness of the importance of supporting local brands, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, nature-lovers, etc.
The label should include motives associated with nature, Slavic mythology or highlander life such as forest, mountain landscape, especially oak trees/leaves, as they are in the center of our present logo. Logo itself remains the same and it is not subject to change in this contest. The label can be an illustration, the type used for comic-books or cartoon-like but realistic. However, illustrated design is not obligatory. Depiction of beer ingredients (barley, hops or hop vine) can also be included in the label but discretely, not to interfere too much with the main motives stated above. What we would like to get from this label is a base design that we could use for other beers as well (by changing the color, etc), but not necessarily. Part of the label could be transparent so the motives, beer name, logo and emblem could really stand out (see Stone brewing label as example), but not necessarily. Mockup of our current label is attached also. Our logo consists of the text Gorstak in Cyrillic and the emblem (shield and oak leaves wreath). These two can be made separate, i.e. text on the front side below or above the beer name and emblem on the side, between the front and back of the label, but not necessarily. Bottle caps are black or white.
What to avoid
Too many different or too bright colors, "hipster" appearance of typical craft beer label.

I fell in love with the design idea the first moment I saw it. It came out simple but effective, just the way I wanted. During the contest the designer was very cooperative and productive.
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
