Food & Drink
The Makers Guild of Maine creates opportunities for people to come together to make beautiful and practical handcrafted items, traditional music and locally sourced food. Learning and sharing these skills reaches across generations and backgrounds and puts front and center the forgotten pleasure - and sense of accomplishment - that come with actually making things - whether it’s a new harmony, a gossamer soft shawl, a sturdy fishing line or a blueberry pie. When we create beautiful, lasting and bespoke things from materials at hand, we are providing a platform for our families and greater communities to live truly rich, healthy and meaningful lives. Our initiatives draw on and invigorate Maine’s heritage and foster entrepreneurial development while removing the social, economic and cultural barriers that often put these activities out of reach. We strive to connect Mainers with each other, and with the larger world.

This PowerPoint presentation is meant to be a sponsorship development tool which will be used to pitch an event to various brands who we are asking for sponsorship. It will need to flexible in that we can change logos and copy as needed.
The event that we are producing is an event called breads and threads. Think Heritage grains and mandala weaving project. Here is a narrative. Please use stock images of only heritage grains (einkorn) etc as background if appropriate. Touchstones is another theme in the event - so large stepping stones - earth colors. TOUCHSTONES 2021 A touchstone was originally a piece of dark, fine grained stone, used to assay silver or gold by the metallic streak they leave on its surface. Nowadays we all have metaphorical touchstones, even if we don’t call them that. They are the objects, experiences and people that we use as personal benchmarks to define our values and aspirations; that we refer to when we need to stay grounded, focused or on the right track. It also seems that something COVID has done is show us that there are a universal touchstones… a few things that have helped many of us cope with fear, uncertaintainty, and the loss of so much we took for granted. We have had to spend more time outside and relearned how important the natural world is for our mental and physical wellbeing. All the social distancing has made us aware of how much we need loving contact and shared community. Cooking at home - especially from basic and, often local ingredients has helped us feel the primal drive to provide food - and tap into the deep comfort that comes from preparing and sharing it. Losing some of our regular routines and social activities opened up a scary abyss of empty hours that needed filling ...which led to the discovery - or rediscovery - of the benefits that come from making things with our hands… how it quiets the mind, gives us a sense of accomplishment and - no matter whether it’s something to wear, use, listen to, or simply to look at - how it meets a deep need we hardly knew we had - to bring meaning, joy and beauty in our lives. These four touchstones - the importance of being outdoors, creating with our hands, making and sharing food, and building community - have underpinned the mission of the Makers Guild from its beginning. But this year we are seeing how powerful they really are. They help us understand what it is to be human...to realise that we are doing and feeling all the same things that humans have done since the beginning of time...and connecting us to every other person on the planet. This is a dimension our workshops we will be bringing into sharper focus thus year : how every act of creating - whether it’s food, music, object, art work, ceremony, or story - is global as well as local, timeless as well as present, and universal as well as particular. ( we can then frame our programs to highlight the heritage we are tapping into… whether it’s ancient bread, the lifetime skills of our local weavers, or the global similarities of stories, symbols, natural materials and pre industrial technologies etc
