We are Ouroots Africa, the sustainable, compostable and plastic-free alternative to conventional plastic straws. Ouroots Africa was founded in 2019 by motivated entrepreneurs of the Social Innovation Academy (SINA) in Uganda. SINA shows disadvantaged young people and refugees a way, tools and way of thinking to design a vision for their future and to create new solutions in the form of social enterprises with benefits for society and the environment. We are a social company that wants to make the world a better place by offering natural and sustainable alternatives to disposable plastics. We approach the plastics problem from the root of the problem: production. All our products are grown from local plants, harvested and hand-picked by local farmers' wives. Our inspiration lies both in the past and in the future - by returning to the natural products our grandparents used, we can offer our children a better and cleaner future. Therefore we return to the roots! The Ugandan Luseke Grass The Luseke grass grows throughout the year and can be harvested after short periods. That’s why our farmers can sell several lots of Luseke every year, making it a very attractive plant for them. It is an endemic plant in our nature, which means that it belongs to the Ugandan ecosystem. But the best thing about Luseke Grass is that it is naturally hollow-shaped, making it the best choice for our natural and compostable drinking straws! Ouroots Africa goes international! Big visions start small - We have set ourselves the goal of expanding into the USA in 2021 and selling on an international platform.
