Ideal Human: Karen Avery is a 35-year old wife of Kurt and mother of two children: a 4-year old son named Jamie and 7-year old daughter named Grace living in Evanston, a suburb of Chicago in a $400k 4BR/4BA spec home in a newer community. She has an undergraduate degree from University of Illinois and a MBA from Northwestern. She is the primary income earner of her family and pulls in $175k annually at Allstate as a director of marketing. Karen was raised to believe "She has to work twice as hard to get half as far". This relentless outwork the competition mindset served her well in the beginning of her career and helped her reach a high level of success at an early age. Lately she has been feeling like she's falling behind and should be further along in her career. She has noticed that when promotions become available they seem to be filled before she has an opportunity to interview. She feels like a hamster on a wheel always chasing a goal just beyond her reach. She is struggling with being overlooked and carrying on the persona of who she thinks people need/want her to be. She is coping through destination-happiness and focused on the external rewards she will receive when she gets to "the next level". Karen doesn't have any hobbies and pours everything into her kids and her work. She sees herself as the version from 5 years ago and doesn't like looking at her pictures from the past or in real-time. She is not prioritizing health and her doctors are beginning to talk with her about changing her habits. She consistently feels fatigued, overwhelmed, disengaged and disconnected. She can't make it through the day without high levels of caffeinated drinks and sugar. She was a college athlete and has always looked fit and fashionable. She has noticed that her size 12 clothes are no longer fitting her well. She has attempted shopping but has struggled with far fewer options that fit her personal style in a size 14. This is starting to affect her confidence and how she shows up in the world. Her big dream is to "arrive" at the level of success that gives her the lifestyle she thinks she wants (career promotion, kids are enrolled in the "right" schools and activities, luxury vacations) so that she can feel proud of her "accomplishments". She is slightly concerned because her time with her family centers around routines and scheduled activities instead of sharing joyful experiences and building memories. While attending a company team building event a warning bell starts to nudge. As she looks around her company at other women who have successfully been promoted, she has observed that every single one of them is either divorced, in the process of a bitter custody negotiation, and/or has kids that are angry and resentful toward a mom they perceive has chosen her career over them. She is starting to question whether climbing the career ladder is truly what she wants because it has come to others at such an extreme cost. Karen wants to build a legacy that her kids can be proud of. She wants to be proud of who she is in her natural state, to know that she is enough. She wants to no longer carry an external persona as a shield. Unfortunately she can no longer see herself clearly. She isn't very connected with understanding her gifts or passions. She currently feels stuck and can't make a decision on how to move forward. On some level she knows that the path she's on does not lead to happiness for herself or her family. She is searching for a guide to help her understand where she lost her way. She wants assistance with figuring out what her gifts are and how to align them to reach her maximum potential across every role in her life: career, family, and health back on-track. And that’s when Rafat shows up and everything starts to change.
