What's your vision?
Dear Artist, The Clouds of Izmah is the second book in our middle-grade fantasy series. Max, the 13 year-old protagonist—a prince in a rural backwater of Arthur's Britain — learns of his father’s incurable illness and latches onto a tale of a wizard who might hold hope. Knowing he will not be allowed the dangerous search for the wizard he sneaks away, accompanied by his cynical elf friend and guide, to gain the wizard’s aid. In the midst of the quest, Max steps into a mystical encounter with the cloud kingdom of Izmah which he had learned of in the first book of the series; The Witch’s Tower. In Izmah he encounters others facing their own particular challenges and meets the ageless Queen of Izmah. Here Max discovers the questions he must ask himself which begin the transformation of his nature for the entire series. The cover we wish to see you depict is this: Max has just entered Izmah by walking into a fog. He meets the cloud shepherd, Felfetter. The cloud shepherd convinces him of his location by pushing his long staff into the mists at their feet and widens out a hole so that Max can see the earth far below. Max is staggered but asks direction to the queen’s palace. Felfetter informs him the fluid nature of the clouds means directions are no good but he has just the thing he will need; a clear crystal on a chain that will glow a blue light brighter and brighter as it nears the palace. Max is delighted as the strange fellow continues to draw out amulets of fantastic usefulness, juggling them in his hands as he speaks. Casually he asks Max if he juggles and the prince readily agrees though he never has. (A spell has fallen upon him.) He receives and juggles the treasures as they are tossed to him feeling delight in them until the spell ends and all begin to fall to the hole beneath his feet. He instinctively throws himself down to catch the silver chain with the crystal as the other treasures vanish below. Felfetter says he has chosen well and Max realizes he has passed an important test. I include a rough sketch I have made of this encounter and notes on coloring and the characters and the items (props) of the scene. You need not replicate the drawing but may use it as an insight. The mystery of the scene and setting should draw the reader in. (A sudden thought might be seeing Max from below the cloud grasping the falling crystal? Just a thought.) Some notes: If you wish more details, please contact me by email. Felfetter’s costume: He is not much taller than Max but older and his hat and staff give him greater height. • britches are yellow, • knee boots brown • Jacket is scarlet • carries a bright blue pouch (contains the various amulets, etc.) • Emerald green hat with large white feather and two silver bells attached to the pointy tip hanging to the side • Long black shepherds’ crook staff • Perhaps a short yellow cape (as in drawing) • Black hair Max description: black hair (sort of page-boy cut), brown eyes, Five foot, three or four. • Cape is green (has hood on back in case you choose that angle.) • Brown jacket • Gauntlets are darker brown • Pants are light green • Boots are dark brown • Max does have a small sword in scabbard. (not shown in my sketch) Objects Felfetter tosses to Max to juggle: • Clear crystal stone with silver chain • A small cut crystal vial with a blue fluid inside • A small golden ball that can be held in the palm of the hand • A golden key to fit all locks We want color and an atmosphere of height and magic and mystery. We need a cover to grab the attention of our middle-grade audience as well as older readers. Book 1 of the series has a cover already designed. This 2nd book cover should have the same fonts and text approach as used in Book 1. That cover is included in this information for reference. Thank you for your interest, David Walker
Please note that book 1 of the series is already done. This is book 2 and it will be called "The Clouds of Izmah". An image of book one is shown so that designers can see what the fonts should be.
