A lot of time has passed since I was last active in the 99designs community and those that know me from the "old days" might rightfully wonder where the hell I've been during the past years and why I show up just now.
Without going into too much (boring) details, I have some turbulent times behind me. A lot has changed since I took my first steps as an Indie Author, including myself. Many of my previous projects have stalled while the realities of life came knocking at my door and my focus drifted away from Fantasy to Cyberpunk before leaving the whole Writing Business altogether and finding new purpose in the abyss of computer code.
I never completely stopped writing in my spare time, however, and right now I'm close to completing my first Cyberpunk novel. I also feel confident enough about it to elevate its status from "desk drawer project" to "published book". Apart from that I'm also planning to release some of my software tools and this is where this particular design contest comes in:
These will be new projects, published by a new me in a new time. Therefore, I wish for my online brand as a whole to reflect this change. A crucial building block of this brand is the profile picture that I use to interact with readers on Amazon, visitors to my websites and fellow coding geeks. Granted, as the attached photo of little old me (hopefully) shows, I'm a more or less presentable caveman as is.
That being said, I have a growing sentiment that I need a more artistic online "avatar". One that fits to the abominations I cook up in my head and leaves a more lasting impression on a viewer than a simple photo.
What I have in mind:
-An illustration depicting a more or less stylised version of myself.
-This illustration will be used as the profile picture for future interactions on my book websites, Amazon, developer forums, my upcoming personal blog and yes, probably even 99designs.
-Because such profile avatars are mostly just shown as thumbnails, the illustration should also be able to make an impression in smaller sizes.
-My upcoming blog will be a hub for both my book projects as well as my software projects. Thus, the illustration should somehow convey my background as an Indie Author who transitioned from the magical realms of Fantasy to the nihilistic neon streets of Cyberpunk as well as that of the tinkerer digging through the abstract datastreams of Cyberspace.
-You can go all dark and edgy if you want. The last thing I take seriously, though, is myself and a tone of humor in the design will be very much appreciated.
-As a final point, the illustration should also give off an air of mystery. Ideally, it should make viewers curious as to what kind of maniac is behind that avatar.
