We write children's books with mass, international appeal. Primarily targeting the preschooler audience but making them attractive to the readers (i.e parents and carers too).
What inspires you and how do you envision the design for your business?
The illustrations to our stories. All stories will be centred around a loveable rogue of a monkey living in London Zoo who repeatedly escapes the zoo to explore working environments of humans (e.g. butcher shops, fish markets, farms, schools, police stations, banks) and returns home to the zoo nightly to share his adventures with his fellow animal friends. Illustrations should communicate the sights, sounds and smells of the places being visited with layers of educational texture as the written text will be simple and repetitive. Please be creative and use intelligent, innocent humour. Human faces should be warm and inviting, animals depictions should reflect their typical nature (cheeky monkey, proud lion etc.) but always remain friendly. The purpose of this brief is to get the first illustration done which should show the monkey himself in one situation. You can choose from the following:
1. At a school desk in a class of children being taught by the teacher.
2. At Billingsgate fish market in London early in the morning.
3. In the bank of England watching money being made.
4. At a big tyre factory, swinging on tyres.
We will be including sites of historical London note for the first series of books; Billingsgate Fish Market, The Old Bailey, The Bank of England, Covent Garden Flower Market, Smithfield Meat Market, New Spitalfields Fruit Market etc. The balance is important between the monkey, the building and the service (teaching, printing, selling) as this will be written about alongside the image. There will be multiple images required following a successful design. Please use the original Paddington bear sketches and the Tiger who came to tea as references for the bled out Watercolour style for the images.
