jacquescockell got their new app design by running a design contest:
Joynt - the University Social Network.
Check out jacquescockell's App design contest…
App for students. Connecting students with shared interests through groups/societies. Think a combination of Slack, Whatsapp and Meetup. Primary functions of app are to find groups - e.g Sports Clubs, a University Law Society, a Student Bank, Student Theatre Group etc - and to communicate via message.
I want to stress that you have full artistic licence - feel free to go crazy and we can iterate. Go for a design full of character - if that means creating an animal character - like the twitter bird, or something else - then go for it! The app is for students, it should be playful :) Be bold with your designs - Facebook and Twitter border on dull designs, and Facebook is over-cluttered. Keep things simple, bold and bright. Play around with font, both in terms of style and sizing. There exists a trend at the moment with cartoons. Apple and Slack, among others, have both used this to good effect. However, feel free to experiment with different styles, Cartoony (Apple/Slack) and Clean (Airbnb). Ask yourself, would you be attracted to your own design if you saw it in the App Store for the first time? If yes, then we're onto something :)
Joynt (A mixture of Joy and Joint, i.e together)
For the purpose of this Contest, the flow consists of 3 main pages. A 'Home/Messages' Page // A 'Search/Discover Groups' Feed // The Group's Channel Page. 1. Home/Messages : This page is very similar to Slack's Homepage to navigate between Channels and Direct Messages. 2. Search/Discover Groups: This Page is similar to the Pinterest feed. The feed is made up of Group Profiles, each one a different society, club etc. It's where students search and discover the Groups that they're interested in. 3. The Group's Profile and Channel Page: This is a mixture of a Facebook Group Page and a Slack style channel - i.e Group information at the top of the page, and a Slack-style messaging section below - all in one page.
