Kiwix got their new app design by running a design contest:
Create a dictionary app for people without internet access

Community & Non-Profit
Kiwix is an offline readers that makes it possible to browse locally stored copies Wikipedia, Project Gutenberg or TED Talks, making knowledge freely available to people with no or limited internet access. Our Customs Apps combine a specific content package and a reader into an easy-to-install app. As our portfolio grows, it is now the right time for us to refresh, update and standardize our apps. We are looking to build a new Wiktionary-based offline dictionary. We envisage the new app will be initially created for several European languages (and then ideally for every language that has at least 100k entries on wiktionary.org). This competition aims to get fresh ideas to help us improve the new app, and perhaps some of our current ones (a list can be found here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=Kiwix+Team the wikimed and wikivoyage apps are closest to what we have in mind). Please note that we are not asking for a revamp of the app (which is content-agnostic), but rather for a design for a content-specific app (ie compared to the exisiting Kiwix app there is no such thing as library, or downloading new content): if people download a dictionary, they will only get a dictionary. In that sense, it will already be simpler than the generic Kiwix app that is available. Note: if you need a Kiwix logo to work from, you can pick an svg at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Logos_of_Kiwix
Black is our brand colour for the Kiwix logo, but for the most part, this app is about accessing information. It should be minimal, clean and meet the Android accessibility guidelines (https://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/accessibility/index.html). It should also be intuitive and easy to navigate for people internationally and in many languages. The first dictionary content that we will use will be in English, but our user interface is in around 100 languages, including left-to-right and right-to-left languages.

What to avoid
By design, we do not want our software to : - be a copy of existing designs. - actively track what users do. Our software is available for users to freely share. This means that whatever measures we use are - in practice - indirect and provided by others, whether these are from Google; or from a wide variety of people and/or organisations. Heavy file size : due to the large amount of content in the app, we need the UX to be light (not image heavy) Since the app is free (not freemium), we would need an action button for donations.
