- Shank Designs
Shank did a great job creating a unique logo for us. He provided many variants, was easy to work with. I would say he went above and beyond for us. We got a lot of value from our contest and from the results Shank provided

How jason5V started their app design journey
What industry do you think your business is most related to?
Its an alarm clock app for Android with a bedside/desk clock display
What do you have in mind for the style and theme of the app?
Looking for a fresh sleek look to bring our app up to date. We love material design but only want to take aspects of it and build upon it. We need something unique to make our app stand out from the crowd. Setting an alarm and especially waking up to an alarm should be a pleasing experience and nice to look at. The displays need to be easy to read and the avoidance of bright colours on the night clock should be avoided as to not illuminate the room. The app is a direct replacement for a bedside alarm clock and attracts a more mature audience.
There are 3 screens we would like designing to identify a design direction. There is scope for further screen design thereafter.
Screen 1 - Bedside clock/desk clock. This is a screen which fills the entire display (removing the status bar and navigation buttons) to display the current time, temperature and weather icon, battery level, next alarm time/hours & minutes until next alarm (switches between the two) and a scrolling text area when a message/notification needs to be displayed to the user. It should feature easily accessible but not intrusive buttons to switch on a nightlight (that illuminates areas of the display to provide a soft glow), enable/disable the next alarm and access settings. These buttons will be not visible to the user until the display is tapped.
Screen 2: Alarm List. This is the screen which displays the alarms set by the user and shows which days or date they will go off, whether they are activated or not as well as other relevant information. It should be intuitive and easy to read with a unique style fitting within material guidelines. We have already coded a floating action button with 4 actions which need to be implemented into the design to add an alarm however the existing colours and icons used can be changed. (screenshot included)
Screen 3 - Alarm Activation. This screen is shown when the alarm is active and has a few optional features depending on the users settings. The user can be asked to answer a math problem with a 15 second timer. If the timer completes and the question is not answered, the alarm sounds for a short time and the timer restarts. We need a way to signify the timer is counting down in an aesthetically pleasing way. Other options will be to dismiss and snooze the alarm.
What to avoid
It is a digital alarm clock but don't hang on to the 'digital' part of that too much which often conjures up the old vintage LED look. We already have that and we are looking to move away from it. Interesting UI elements are a bonus but do try to think how the standard set of Android controls can be used to simplify coding. Use material guidelines where possible and do not overcomplicate the display.
