Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
We are a cancer research lab at Ghent University and are publishing an article in the top-ranked scientific journal Nature. We have the opportunity to submit artwork for the cover of the journal, based on the results of our study. The target audience are molecular biologists. The artwork for the cover should follow the style of previous covers that were published by the journal.
What inspires you and how do you envision the design for your business?
We discovered a gene encoding a long non-coding RNA that is specifically expressed in melanoma cancer cells. This gene is essential for the survival of these cells as it helps boost the energy production required by the cells to rapidly divide. Because of it's function, we named it SAMMSON for Survival Associated Mitochondrial Melanoma Specific ONcogenic RNA. SAMMSON refers to the biblical figure Samson. Similar to Samson depending on his hair for his strength/energy/power, melanoma cells rely on SAMMSON for their energy and survival. An design depicting the figure of Samson supporting melanoma cells or helping them divide (see attachment for an example) could be one option for the design but we are open to all creative designs (i.e. link to energy supply etc). An actual image of melanoma cells is also included. The yellow dots represent SAMMSON molecules inside the cells.
A completely different concept for the cover could be the following: The SAMMSON gene is what we call a 'long non-coding RNA'. These type of molecules are often depicted as in this figure: https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct…4439045972

Instead of including the figure of Samson, a cover that is based on this type of structure could also be an option.
Important to keep in mind is the style of the covers that are used by the journal Nature. These are almost always based on pictures rather than drawings. Examples of previous covers can be found by searching for 'Nature cover' in google and look for images. Covers can also be found on the journal's website (http://www.nature.com/nature/current_issue.html).
