Legend of the Cipitio
Salvadoran tradition still remembers about a leprechaun dressed all in white in a broad straw hat wandering among the mills and coffee crops leaving a trail of banana peels in its path and footprints that were impossible to follow because they were going in opposite directions or suddenly disappeared on side cliffs, rivers or sites that were very difficult to reach because of the thick bushes. Witnesses of these spontaneous sightings were mainly young women who mostly agree that the dwarf child whispered softly behind them and threw pebbles at them. He spoke vulgar and double meaning phrases in a flirting tone. He would sometimes also blow kisses and then suddenly laugh out loud in mockery. They claim to have seen him jump and disappear in midair, leaving behind a cloud of ash and dust.
He was called "Cipit", which in Nahuatl means Child, and this name later became commonly known as "The Cipitio". My grandfather used to say that he was cursed from birth, by old Cuscatlán gods, to wander alone through the countryside and to be a child in love till eternity. During some nights, people have said they hear him mourning inconsolably and that a woman without a face, and hair that drags to the floor, cooed him with soft lullabies.
