I really would prefer something sleek and modern. Should be professional and not cartoonish. Using a gator in the logo is fine as long as it fits the classification of professional. I do like the general idea of being able to use the G as a social icon with the gator incorporated but it's not a must have. I am a big fan of using negative space as part of a word mark to make it simple. Using a simple outline of a Gator over the top of the word Gator seems to be something I keep getting drawn to in terms of design as well.
