Innovation to End Neglected Diseases
Medical & Pharmaceutical
We are a newly formed non-profit entity committed to ending tropical infectious diseases and diseases of the developing world. We plan to develop new medical therapies and diagnostic tests to treat and diagnose neglected tropical diseases, as classified by the World Health Organization. Many of these diseases have no drug therapies or vaccines available. They are called “neglected” as there is little treatment or research funding devoted to these diseases. These diseases disproportionally affect low-income populations in developing regions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. We are committed to improving global human health by developing new drugs and diagnostic tests for tropical diseases. We will advance our mission by collaborating with other organizations that are also committed to global health, so that that patients and doctors in the developing world will have open access to our discoveries. The first project in our pipeline is the development of an orally-available drug to treat late stage African Sleeping Sickness (Human African Trypanosomiasis). This lethal disease is caused by a parasite that invades the brain and central nervous system. Current treatments cause death in 5% of the cases and are ineffective because of drug-resistance. Our proposed treatment is safe in humans, as it has already undergone human clinical trials. Our team of scientists and doctors plan to advance this candidate drug through completion of clinical trials and then make the drug available at cost (non-profit drug company model). As a non-profit, we are solely dependent on the generosity of altruistic supporters. We plan to build a secure website that describes our mission and will have a donation feature. This will represent the world’s first crowd-sourced open drug-development project for human benefit. We seek a logo that emphasizes our mission to end neglected diseases. Our acronym is “It ENDs” because global disease: it ends by all of us working together. Some example websites of similar organizations include: www.end.org www.phactcro.org www.ddtd.org
