Entertainment & The Arts
Our organization promotes swing dancing to jazz and blues music (specifically Big Band Jazz from the 30s - 40s as well as Jump Blues - see video links in "Images for Inspiration" for examples). We host social dances, teach Swing Dancing lessons (mostly Lindy Hop and Charleston), promote live music by dancing to live bands, and do dance performances at local events. One of the great things about swing dancing is that it is very open to expression and individuality. Although there are many moves to learn and styles to master, there aren’t a lot of ‘rules’. Once you have learned the basics you can play and innovate and make the dance your own. Also, many of our dancers come without a partner. So we’d like our logo to reflect this sense of individuality and playfulness. However, the biggest reason we have kept our current members is because we are friendly and the dancing is fun. We offer a place to hang out and listen to great music, and dancing is the activity we all do together. So we would also like the logo to reflect this sense of friendship and community. Our target audience is quite varied: We have dancers from 18-65 and from many different backgrounds. It is a niche activity and attracts people who enjoy having a pastime that is active, fun, musical and considered somewhat of a counter-culture. We would like to increase the number of dancers in the 20-35 age range, so a vibrant and modern logo is necessary. Our logo will need to work well across different media. We plan to use it on the web, in print and on clothing.
Our name is "Red Aces" because we are from Red Deer, Alberta, and also because Ace has a bunch of connotations in 1920s / 30s / 40s culture, all of whose music we draw on. The most relevant one is the flying aces (pilots from WWI and WWII). However, car drivers were also known as pilots or aces, and there are several kinds of Ace cars (Ace Automobiles - 1920s / Jordan Speedway Ace - 1930s / AC Ace - 1950s & 60s); Ace is also 1930s slang for awesome. We are uploading photos of things that inspire us / seem relevant or include elements we'd like to see in the design. Please use these as a jumping off point, not a limitation. We are also uploading the logos of other clubs in our province - we would like to be visually distinct from all of them. Finally, if you only look at one item in our included resources, please read our website: http://redaces.ca. The tone here is what we’re going for. Thank you for your time! We are very excited to see your work :)
