Matanuska Outdoor Institute's mission is to deliver an exceptional outdoor adventure program which gives students challenges and opportunities to develop self reliance, self resiliency, leadership characteristics, and community. Our philosophy of being capable revolves around the knowledge and skills that are gained outside. Outside the classroom, outside the institution, outside the workforce. We look outside, to nature, to the elements, the environment and the challenges inherent in living, moving across and through these places. The skills that were once a given for many peoples have been lost to the modern world. These skills could be as complex as building a shelter or as simple as planning a meal with friends. The knowledge and skills we gain by our exposure to the outside and our exposure to group living provide the platform for advancing our capabilities in all arenas and all aspects of life. This program is primarily targeting age 19-28 year old students that are interested in the outdoors.
