Protecting and promoting the historical, cultural and natural resources of Nevis
Community & Non-Profit
The Nevis Historical & Conservation Society is located on a very small Caribbean island (36 square miles, 10,000 residents). Nevis is where Alexander Hamilton was born & where Britain's naval hero Admiral Nelson was married. The Society has 3 areas of focus: (i) 2 Museums with historical collections & archives (ii) Historical Sites & Structures (iii) Ecology & the Environment Target audience is thousands of tourists who visit the island annually, locals, teachers, donors and grant-making organizations.
DESIGN BRIEF The Nevis Historical & Conservation Society Organizational Identity & Branding Brief The Nevis Historical & Conservation Society is a non-governmental, non- profit organization, located on the small Caribbean island of Nevis. (Population 10,000). Since its founding four decades ago, the Nevis Historical & Conservation Society has been organized around three distinct areas of interest: I: In connection with its mission, The Nevis Historical & Conservation Society currently operates 3 museums on the island of Nevis; the Museum of Nevis History, Hamilton House, (adjacent to the Historical Museum,) which is being developed into a house museum to honor Nevis-born Alexander Hamilton) and the Nelson Museum, dedicated to Admiral Horatio Nelson, a British naval hero, who was married on Nevis. . 2. In addition, the Society is responsible for the preservation & maintenance (including signage and descriptive story boards) of several historical sites and structures across the 36 square mile island, as part of the Nevis Heritage Trail. 3. The Society is also engaged in a wide range of environmental protection and ecology-related efforts, including coastal cleanups, lobbying against single use plastics, mitigating land degradation through reforestation and protection of wetlands IDENTITY, BRANDING & COMMUNICATIONS IMPERATIVE As part of a comprehensive strategic planning process, the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society has determined that it is imperative that the Society’s organizational identity be entirely overhauled. The Society views this identity and branding re-do as a “start-from scratch” initiative, rather than an identity “refresh.” Said differently, there is little if any legacy identity that ought to be preserved. SCOPE OF THE IDENTITY, BRANDING & COMMUNICATIONS INITIATIVE When fully implemented, the Society’s new identity, branding and communications initiative will encompass and extend (but not be limited to) the following applications: • Logomark • Website(s) (The Society intends to license a template-driven site) • Signage on Facilities • Letterhead & Envelopes • Business Cards • Mastheads for Newsletters & Member Communications • Promotional Materials, including flyers, posters, mailers, event invitations • Merchandise: T-shirts, Mugs • Grant Proposals • Social Media Campaigns & Communications (Facebook, Instagram, etc) • Communication templates for internal and external use • Iconography to depict/identify specific areas of focus/interest NOTE: It is not necessary or even anticipated that a single designer will necessarily have the skill set or technical competence to create a distinctive logomark, design a new and compelling “look and feel” for the Society, and, within the same project, “build” the Society’s website. This project is limited in its scope to the development of a logomark, a compelling look and feel, including color palettes, typography and basic brand and identity guidelines. ISSUES THAT MUST BE CONSIDERED I: As consultants, we recognize that the Society has multiple distinct missions, which adds a little challenge to the effort of both creating a relevant , inclusive logomark. That said, the Society’s activities/focus can really be organized into just two (rather than four) overarching areas of focus: Historical Protection & Preservation (museums, sites and monuments, archives, collections) & Environmental Protection & Preservation. Our expectation is that the new logomark will incorporate (always be shown/seen with) the following tag line that effectively describes the Society’s mission: “To promote and protect the historical, cultural and natural resources of the island of Nevis. LOOK & FEEL The logomark should be institutional but not stuffy. It should and invoke a sense of history and nature, while still being contemporary (but it needs to be able to age well!) Whatever logo is created there will potentially be derivatives made from it in terms of an eventual iconography for the organization (ie. symbols created for each of the 4 quadrants (areas of mission) that then would be used for the website sections, etc.) In terms of a color palette we do not want to limit creativity. That said, we have discussed blues and greens & feel that they might be translated to the ecological and historical aspects of the organization. They're soothing, natural feeling and can create collateral that really pops without being gaudy.
