Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
develop non-toxic substitutes for the poisonous chemicals presently used to control household insect pests. Based on recent research on RNA Interference (RNAi), it will design novel genetic controls that disrupt insects’ vital metabolic processes. The Phase I work begins by identifying genes that, when silenced, will induce death in Argentine ants. Using those genes, yeast cells will then be transformed to produce the molecules necessary for gene silencing. Finally, colonies of yeast clones will be grown and processed into bait that is lethal only to the target species.
