The design should pair the words Futility Closet with a distinctive icon that can stand on its own. It needn't play explicitly on the "closet" idea (though it can). Once I have a logo I'll be redesigning the site, so the new logo needn't match the current theme.
I like the simplicity, elegance, and refinement of the current design, but it's a bit stark -- a newcomer can't tell what the site is *about* without reading the content.
I'd like to address that somewhat with a new logo. The site is a collection of brief, self-contained amusements for the intellectually curious -- puzzles, paradoxes, mathematical curiosities, oddities in language, art, chess, philosophy and history. I'm looking for a logo that conveys this while retaining the essential simplicity and elegance of the current design.
An earlier contest produced logos that were appealing and elegant but that tended to lack an explicit reference to intellectual amusement; here I would like to encourage more exploration in that direction and to ask that the icon be separate from the text, so that it can stand recognizably on its own.
