Cerulean Coffee is a new ultra-premium, shade-grown coffee brand focused on sourcing, roasting, and selling only Earth-friendly beans. Our primary focus is on what is called shade-grown coffee. The genesis and inspiration for Cerulean Coffee comes from my wife April Pulley Sayre who passed almost five months ago after a valiant, protracted fight against metastatic breast cancer. She was a highly acclaimed, award-winning children’s book author focused on sharing science and nature with young readers. Together we were avid birders and conservationists. Although I do not have an official slogan at this time, I have loosely used the slogan, April’s Bird Coffee (ABC). All our coffees are sourced from verifiable shade-grown coffee estates. These farms work to conserve and restore native forest habitat to protect bird and other species. Coffee originally evolved as an understory shrub growing under the protective cover of the forest canopy in the tropical rainforests of Ethiopia. Although native, wild coffee is an understory plant, through centuries of crossbreeding and experimental agriculture, sun-tolerant coffee varieties were created. Eventually coffee varieties that loved, even required, full sun were preferred as they produced more yield per plant than their wild-type, shade-grown cousins. As global coffee demand increased, more and more primary rainforest hectares were cut down each year to make room for more and more sun-hungry coffee plants. Today, the vast majority of all coffee produced is grown in full sun. Land that once was teaming with wildlife has become a monoculture desert producing one commodity in an endless battle to quench the ravenous caffeine thirst of (primarily) western consumers. Over centuries, cultivars were bred that were more sun tolerant, eventually requiring full sun. This meant destroying rainforests to plant the full-sun varieties. We are working with small farmers to either preserve or restore the rainforest where they live and plant the original shade-adapted coffee species. This helps to preserve biodiversity by protecting the plants and animals in a region. Our company’s name comes from the Cerulean Warbler, one of many species of neotropical migratory birds that benefits from shaded coffee plantations. The Cerulean Warbler migrates to North America, north of Mexico, each spring to nest, then in the fall it migrates back down to (primarily) South America to over winter. The forested coffee estates and farms of Columbia are one area of the continent where the Cerulean Warbler thrives in the winter. It is a species in decline due in part to habitat loss on both its breeding and wintering grounds. By encouraging coffee farmers to protect and restore the forests, we can positively impact the population of Cerulean Warblers and many other migratory and resident species that depend on these lands. I have uploaded three images. One is a female Cerulean Warbler in breeding plumage. Her colors are subtle but magnificent. I would like the female Cerulean to be the featured bird. The design's color palette should primarily be inspired by her (the female's) varied colors. The second image is of a male Cerulean Warbler. He's primarily a single color. The final image is of my wife and I in the canopy of the tropical rainforest in Panama.
