**************** THE PROJECT I'm surprising my mother with a logo design for her dream business: a Parisian cafe. "Laurier" comes from the French word for "laurel," which is where her name, Laura, comes from. **************** OUR PROBLEM I like to think Café Laurier started more or less organically, born purely out of my mother’s passion for travel and good coffee. As a result, business details like creating a logo never occurred to anyone. Now, it's time. **************** WHAT WE NEED This contest is for a logo design. We will mostly be printing this logo on a rectangular sign, on napkins, and on the sleeves of coffee cups. Not asking you to design these things but to keep it in mind for the shape of the logo. While we would like to keep our air of mystery (to give our patrons the thrill of having discovered a secret in the heart of Paris), we want to give people a little nudge to know who and where we are. **************** WHAT TO AVOID Excessive ornamentation. Characters and mascots. The hipster/trendy cafe look. Geometric styles. Possibly the logo should not be too circular in shape, but will leave that up to your judgment. Be careful with common cafe concepts like coffee beans, cups, etc. **************** SETTING THE SCENE On the outside, Café Laurier is your typical hole-in-the-wall hidden in the back streets of Paris’s 13th Arrondissement. A modest brick façade wedged between a pair of larger, nondescript apartment buildings. A couple chairs and tables situated around the door. A lone chalkboard menu. A lopsided “Open” sign in the window. Walking by on your way to a shopping trip or to visit the Louvre, you might easily miss it. But should you take a chance and enter, you will find a warm, inviting, old-world cafe. The air is dense with the aroma of coffee so full-bodied you can already taste it. The floor vibrates beneath your feet as a jazz player strums a standing bass. Scattered throughout are people from all walks of life, some of them working but all finding a way to relax in the cozy ambiance. And behind the counter is the cafe's proprietor—my mother, Laura. She is surprised and delighted to see you, as though you are an old friend, and like an old friend, you feel guilty to have made her wait for a reunion. You wonder what has kept you away for so long—nothing in the world seems as important as this cup of coffee, this endearing woman—and you consider that this time you may never leave. **************** AUDIENCE Our doors are open to everyone and anyone, and our patronage reflects this. Families with children. Students. Professionals. Couples. The occasional dog. Anyone looking for a break on a long walk through the city. Anyone with taste for the excellent baking and a longing for home. That said, those who might avoid us include people overly concerned with their diet, and those looking for a more contemporary/modern setting.
