OK, first up, please, please, please I do not want a literal interpretation of the words Boss and Level as many of the entries seem to be focusing on. Please no evil bosses*, I don't want to scare people. Please read the website at http:/www.bosslevelgames.com to get a feel for our philosophy and the thinking behind the choice of Boss Level as the company name but smart game design is not the be-all-and-end-all of the company (see the comments about funding below).
The thinking behind the current logo (done by me - I know, I'm no graphic artist !) is that you're playing some arcade game (probably a shoot'em'up) and this is what flashes up on screen as you're about to enter the final level. I like this idea but it may perhaps be a little too dependent on inside knowledge (like the name) - I'd like the brand to be inclusive to young/old/male/female so feel free to tinker as you see fit.
Whilst I'm not averse to a retro/8-bit style I do feel that this is getting a little tired now so please just don't default to this style without thought.
I'm also actually interested in two logos as we have two brands - Boss Level and Boss Level Bonus (which essentially are small pick up and play puzzle games). I only envisage this as being the main logo with "BONUS" slapped on it (much like a "Beta" tag) hence my listing it here and not using a seperate competition. You don't need to worry about this but it would be good to bear it in mind and if the winning design does provide for this as well then I'll obviously compensate the winner.
<additional info from one of the comments I made>I should have mentioned that the ability for the logo to look good against a dark background is a must.
Secondly I am quite a fan of the icon + text approach in #2 and #3 but sadly I don't see the arcade cabinet as being our icon - it gives a retro feel to me. <VERY IMPORTANT> What would be a better icon would be some means of incorporating a pc, mobile and tv and lots of heads/players to illustrate our multi-platform, multi-player approach as well as some sense of movement to indicate communication between them all (maybe with Boss Level as the common link).</ VERY IMPORTANT>
Re the Bonus tag, I'm expecting this in a different font, kind've like in a star like frame - you know what I mean - "Now 39p!", "New and Improved" etc - I can find an example if you need one.</ additional info from one of the comments I made>
<some more comments>I'm liking the use of colours so far but it would be good if a contrast colour could be incorporated - we'll be using these colours in the revamped web-site so I'll need something aside from black/white to highlight. Doesn't have to be much (could be a 1px drop-shadow).
<VERY IMPORTANT> Also I should point out that we're currently going through investment rounds. Thus not only is it important that we communicate the brand philosphy outlined on the website but also that I'm able to use the logo to illustrate my pitch to investors. That pitch is around the multi-platform (web, mobile, TV), multi-player HTML5-based games so it would be great if you can incorporate that. </ VERY IMPORTANT>
Sounds like I'm asking the earth, and that's cos I am ;-) </ some more comments>
Another suggestion - I would probably prefer the text to all be on one line. The reason for this is that many of the screens which our games will be played on will be the widescreen format so I would like the logo to represent that (and fit better with a more regular border)
* Re the evil bosses stuff, if you do want to sneak a boss in there (I like sneaky references) then please bear in mind that bosses don't have to look evil. If you look at the background png I've included, all of those characters are bosses and yet one is a young girl, a few are computers etc
<another tip>Rather than use a joystick or an arcade machine to symbolise games, our input methods will actually be mice/keyboard, touch and TV remote controls so better to use these for icons.</another tip>
