Markovsky got their new logo design by running a design contest:
Hemlock Knots: Logo with "splitting wood" theme (based on a quote)

We're a research website, podcast, YouTube channel, Facebook page, Facebook group - we will have a weekly show (YouTube & Facebook livestream) beginning in July, targeting religious and academic discussion from the 1800s American era, including the early pioneer and Mormon settlement timeframe. We'd like for the art to match that general theme. It's important that you UNDERSTAND THE METAPHOR behind the name of the site (Hemlock Knots). The site name is derived from a famous quote by Joseph Smith: "There has been a great difficulty in getting anything into the heads of this generation. It has been like splitting [cutting logs into firewood] hemlock [a type of wood] knots [tough to split] with a corn-dodger [corn bread] for a wedge and a pumpkin for a beetle [mallet or hammer]." The winning design should highlight the idea and theme of the quote, to some degree.
Other color requirements
No, but not too colorful. Earthy tones is probably ideal, but we can play with colors if the design concept is strong. Not too worried about colors right now. We don't have any company colors right now, but we will, based on the logo, so feel free to be creative with your colors. Nothing too colorful or immature. I believe that subdued "frontier" or "western" tones will match the feel of the show far better than halloween-style pumpkins and bright colored "clip art." Lean towards a western/frontier/cowboy/manly look and feel, as it will match the accent of the voice talent and the music of the show (song is "Cowboy Lullaby" by JHS Pedals, starting at 18 second mark - https://youtu.be/DRyf-QqibQA?t=18).
This logo will be on several channels, some small sizes (watermarks on videos), some large (banners on social channels) and several in between. Consider that when designing. I threw together some clip art as the original logo, but not much thought and effort went into it (you do NOT need to try to replicate it, but it has that basic "feel" to it. We (you) can do MUCH better, so go for it. - here's the site: https://hemlockknots.com - facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/hemlockknots/
