Camp Common Ground is an overnight multicultural camp for select (30) Bay Area current 5th-8th graders from different socioeconomic, racial, and religious backgrounds to build empathy and leadership skills! In the redwoods, campers enjoy swimming, hiking, archery, ropes course, sports, drama, and special team challenges to build understanding. Campers walk away with the social-emotional, intercultural, and collaboration skills to be changemakers in our diverse world. Tuition is sliding scale, so about 1/3 come free and 1/3 pay full tuition.
Our mission is to disrupt cycles of racial and economic segregation by fostering an integrated and loving youth community in the Bay Area (based in Oakland). We plan to do this by creating strong friendships at camp, and developing diverse cohorts of youth leaders who will bring their families and friends into the community through monthly social events (think BBQ or rock climbing) during the school year. In concept, imagine the seriousness of a Truman Scholarship (civic leaders fellowship) for young people from different backgrounds, but with the heart, soul, and joy of a traditional summer camp.
Our current slogan is: "Lead with Empathy."
The target audience is multifaceted:
-Parents of wealthy, middle income, and very low income 5th-8th graders
-5th-8th graders (for wealthier families, parents play a bigger role in the decision, and in lower wealth families, kids play a bigger role in applying)
-Foundations and individual donors
-Other organizations (for collaborative partnerships)
