Culture Factory is the rehabilitation project of Old Slemani Cigarette Factory.
Slemani Cigarette Factory was one of the active factories that had major economic impacts on the city during the years of its operation in 1959 to 2003. Fortunately, the building has remained secured; therefore, we are trying to rehabilitate it to be a center of culture and creativity.
Culture Factory is an attempt to develop the Cultural Capital in the Slemani and to create a place that gathers the cultural abilities. Besides that, it also could be a place for cultural integration and a center for dialogue with other cities of Iraq which is one of the main necessities of reconstructing the Iraqi society. The project also aims in developing cultural economics. Although Slemani is considered as a cultural city, at the moment its only income source is oil.
Our objective is to create a place for enhancing the city's cultural income where it produces depending on its creative abilities.
In general the project considers the following:
Cultural Development/ Creativity:
Enhancing the creative activities of the various groups that includes not only artists but also all activities that are related to creativity such as handcraft, scientific center, media center, educational center and museums. Creating a platform for cultural integration and dialogue in Iraq and internationally as well.
A city's cultural and creative abilities should be effective for developing the society because making policies and decisions about a city should be within the participations of the various groups in the society. This attempt could be seen as democratizing the decisions of a society.
Cultural Economics Development:
The task of cultural economics development could be an alternative for the existing economic source in Slemani. Providing a place for te cultural projects that have income source such as producing music, producing film, theater, painting, radio, design, print, handcraft, architect, journalism, advertising and programing. Also, creating a network between the projects in Slemani and Iraq as well is another task while opening a consulting center for developing the cultural projects.
Sustainable Development and Environment:
A place for discussion about the environmental issues and sustainable development in general, the center aims to change way of thinking and the individuals' actions as well as raising awareness. It could be a place to discuss solutions for nowadays and future environmental crisis. It is achieved through preparing educational environmental programs for the various components of the society in order to have an active role in reconstructing the future of the city and their natural surroundings.
In the center, green energy will be used as an alternative example for oil energy. Most of us know that in a near future oil is decreasing and it has become one of the world's crisis. This crisis has not been taken seriously in Iraq. Creating this center based on environmental principles and sustainable development is an example to make alternative concepts for future society development.
So if you have creative and cultural ideas you come to Culture Factory.
Creating Slemani in 1784 as the first Kurdish independent city was a reason for the city in its first place to be a center of political and cultural activities. Another characteristic of the city is that since its beginning it was a place that collected various cultures from other surrounding areas that entered the city. Integrating various cultures and living together appears as an obvious identification of the city. Also besides Islam, there were other religions such as, Judaism, Christianity and Kakeiy. Nowadays Slemani is officially recognized as the Culture Capital by the Kurdistan Parliament.
